How to move a heavy safe: weights, methods and typical UK costs
Short answer: A heavy safe is moved by assessing its weight, the route and the floor, then using a pallet truck, machine skates, a powered stair climber or a lorry-mounted crane depending on where it has to go. Small home fire safes can often be moved by two people with a sack truck, but anything over about 150 kg, or any safe going up or down stairs, should be handled by a specialist. A typical ground-floor local move usually costs £250 to £600, with stairs, basements and crane lifts costing more.

How heavy is a safe?

Safes are far heavier than they look because the weight is in the steel body, the door and the fire-resistant fill. The figures below are rough guides only. Always check the maker's plate or the original paperwork, because two safes of the same size can differ by hundreds of kilograms.

Type of safeTypical empty weight
Small home fire or key safe20 to 60 kg
Medium home or office security safe80 to 250 kg
Graded commercial cash safe300 to 1,000 kg
Large high-grade or old Victorian safe1 to 3 tonnes or more
Gun cabinet (steel, bolted)30 to 120 kg

Older cast and riveted safes, often found in shops, banks and solicitors' offices, are especially heavy for their size. Many people assume an old safe is around half a tonne when it is actually well over a tonne.

The methods used to move a safe

  • Pallet truck or heavy-duty sack truck for lighter safes on level floors
  • Machine skates and toe jacks for heavy safes moving along a floor
  • Powered tracked stair climbers for safes going up or down stairs, within the machine's rated capacity
  • Gantries or chain blocks where a safe must be lifted into or out of a tight space
  • HIAB lorry loader or mobile crane where a safe goes through a window or over a wall
  • Floor spreader plates, plywood or steel sheets to spread the load across weak floors

The safe is usually emptied first, the door locked shut and secured so it cannot swing, and the body protected with blankets. Doors on large safes can weigh a significant share of the total, so an open door during a move unbalances the load.

Check the floor and the stairs first

The floor is often the real limit. A domestic suspended timber floor is typically designed for a spread load of around 1.5 kN per square metre, which is roughly 150 kg per square metre. A 500 kg safe standing on a small footprint concentrates far more than that onto a few joists. Upper floors, mezzanines and old timber stairs need checking before a heavy safe is placed or moved over them.

  • Find out what is under the final position: joists, a concrete slab or a void
  • Check which way the joists run and place the safe across several of them, near a load-bearing wall where possible
  • Ask a structural engineer to check any upper-floor position for a safe over a few hundred kilograms
  • Check stair treads, nosings and handrail fixings, and protect finished stair surfaces

Typical UK costs for moving a safe

JobTypical guide price (2026)
Small safe, ground floor, local£150 to £350
Medium safe, ground floor, local£250 to £600
Heavy safe up or down one flight of stairs£500 to £1,500
Large safe into or out of a basement£800 to £2,500
Safe lifted by HIAB through a window or over a wall£900 to £3,000
Old safe removal and scrap recycling£200 to £800

These are guide ranges. The final price depends on the weight, the number of steps, the distance, parking and whether any lifting equipment or extra crew is needed. A clear photo of the safe, its maker's plate if visible, and the route usually gets you a firm price.

Bolted-down safes and getting into old safes

Many safes are bolted to the floor or a wall from inside. The bolts have to be removed from inside the safe, which means it must be opened first. If the keys or the combination are lost, a locksmith or safe engineer is needed before anyone can move it. Do not try to lever a bolted safe off its fixings: this damages the floor and can tip the safe.

If an old safe is being scrapped, it still needs to be opened and checked first. Some old safes contain documents or valuables, and a few very old ones may have fill materials that need careful handling, so ask before anyone cuts or breaks one up.

Doing it yourself: where to stop

  • Two fit adults with a good sack truck can usually handle a small home safe on level ground
  • Never carry a heavy safe on stairs by hand, as it only takes one slip for it to run away
  • Do not use a domestic pallet truck on a suspended timber floor without spreading the load
  • Avoid tipping tall safes, because the centre of gravity is often high and towards the door side
  • If you need ramps, straps and more than two people, it is time to call a specialist

Frequently asked questions

Can a safe be moved upstairs?

Yes, most safes can be moved upstairs using a powered tracked stair climber, provided the safe is within the climber's rated capacity and the stairs are strong enough and wide enough. Very heavy safes may need to be lifted through a window by HIAB or crane instead. The final floor position also needs checking, because a heavy safe concentrates a lot of weight on a small area of joists.

Do I need to empty a safe before it is moved?

Yes, it is strongly recommended. Contents shift during a move and can damage the inside of the safe, and loose items change the balance. Emptying also reduces weight slightly and avoids any dispute about valuables. Lock the empty safe so the door cannot swing open while it is being moved, and keep the keys or combination with you.

What happens to an old safe I no longer want?

An unwanted safe can be resold if it is a recognised grade and in good order, or taken for scrap metal recycling. It must be opened and checked first. Scrap metal dealers in England and Wales cannot pay cash for scrap under the Scrap Metal Dealers Act 2013, so any value is paid by bank transfer or cheque, and the cost of moving it often outweighs the scrap value.
